Warnings Unheeded

The last mistake of humanity was arrogance.

They were warned by their ancestors.

“What is here is dangerous and repulsive to us.”

As humans do, they proceeded with little fear — more than willing to defy the words of ancient gods. With little hesitation, they cracked open the oldest grave they knew and from it crawled Death, invisible to the eye. It became one with their breath and made it’s home in their breast, content to begin its slow work.

Death’s fallout came — it started with the first children born after their sin. Frail, tiny things whose living breaths could be counted on a single hand. The fallout continued with the elders, stealing what it could and ending long lives with dishonor. When the fallout came for the young, the strong, the powerful…it was already too late. The devil from deep within the earth had become part of everything around it, sparing no tree, no beast, no human being.

The Last of the Arrogant could only scrawl a message of their own, desperate to leave a trace behind so that any Thing that survived could avoid the same fate.

“The danger is still present in your time as it was in ours.”
